"RAILWAYS - SPECIFICS, CHALENGES AND LIMITS OFPRESERVATION AND NEW USE OF RAILWAY HERITAGE"

The department of Architecture at the Faculty of civil engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague is organizing the 3rd Conference of Ph.D. study programme Architecture and Building engineering and its visitors. The goal of the conference is a dialogue among specialists in practice and young research workers.

The Topic of this year conference is "Railways - specifics, challenges and limits of preservation and new use of railway heritage".

The Conference will be hold on the 20th October 2017 in the Prague Studio ALTA.

A railway as a distinctive dynamic element and an integral part of the landscape and settlements is transforming into new forms up to the present. Although, it is to a certain extent in decline and leaves in the urban and rural areas unattainable areas and objects, to which the contemporary architects and urban planners have to respond in their considerations about the development of settlements and landscapes, these stagnations and declining also offer new challenges. In the former monofunctional zones, thanks to transformation of the areas and the conversion of objects they get new functions, forms and users, that bring them closer to the contemporary forms of life. These changes balance between the different levels of preservation, the possibilities of research, but as well of the destruction.

The goal of the Conference is not only to summarize the experience of research in the field of railway transport from the point of view of history and to point out the issues of selection and evaluation of railway heritage as a part of the heritage care, but also to outline various ways of new use.
